# Is there a qualification or certification for AI governance?

A qualification for a person and a certificate for an organisation answer different questions.

The Assurance Desk. Published 7 October 2026. Last checked 7 October 2026.

**The short answer.** Yes. IAPP offers the AIGP credential for a person’s AI governance knowledge. ISO/IEC 42001:2023 covers an organisation’s AI management system. Decide whether you want to develop someone’s skills or have the organisation’s system assessed ([IAPP, AIGP: Artificial Intelligence Governance Professional](https://iapp.org/certify/aigp) and [UKAS, Artificial Intelligence Management Systems, New Projects](https://www.ukas.com/accreditation/about/developing-new-programmes/development-programmes/aims/), checked 7 October 2026).

## What is the AIGP qualification?

AIGP covers knowledge of AI development, deployment and management. IAPP publishes a Body of Knowledge and Exam Blueprint, which is the syllabus for the credential. Start there to see whether the topics fit the work you need to do ([IAPP, AIGP: Artificial Intelligence Governance Professional](https://iapp.org/certify/aigp), checked 7 October 2026).

It also offers a downloadable guide to the exam format and sample questions. The candidate handbook explains the testing policies. Read these before choosing a course or booking an exam ([IAPP, AIGP: Artificial Intelligence Governance Professional](https://iapp.org/certify/aigp), checked 7 October 2026).

## How is AIGP different from ISO 42001 certification?

AIGP concerns the person. ISO 42001 concerns the organisation’s system for managing AI. Accredited certification means that system has been assessed by a competent and impartial certification body ([IAPP, AIGP: Artificial Intelligence Governance Professional](https://iapp.org/certify/aigp) and [UKAS, Artificial Intelligence Management Systems, New Projects](https://www.ukas.com/accreditation/about/developing-new-programmes/development-programmes/aims/), checked 7 October 2026).

**Choose the question you want to answer**

| Route | What it concerns | What to check |
| --- | --- | --- |
| AIGP | A person’s AI governance knowledge and practice | Read the syllabus, exam guide and candidate handbook. |
| ISO/IEC 42001:2023 | An organisation’s AI management system | Define the system you want assessed and the certification work. |

**A person’s skills, an organisation’s system**

- **Develop knowledge**
  - AIGP is a personal credential.
  - Its syllabus covers AI governance topics.
- **Assess a system**
  - ISO 42001 sets system requirements.
  - Accredited certification adds independent assessment.

These routes serve different purposes. Choose around the work you need to do.

## Does a training course mean you will pass?

No. IAPP says taking training does not guarantee an exam pass. Use the syllabus and sample questions to decide what preparation you need, rather than relying on the course title alone ([IAPP, AIGP: Artificial Intelligence Governance Professional](https://iapp.org/certify/aigp) and [IAPP, Certification FAQs](https://iapp.org/certify/faqs), checked 7 October 2026).

Keeping an IAPP credential also involves continuing education and either a maintenance fee or membership. Ask about those ongoing requirements as well as the first exam and training costs ([IAPP, Certification FAQs](https://iapp.org/certify/faqs), checked 7 October 2026).

## How do you make the learning useful at work?

Oliver Patel argues that AI governance has to fit the organisation’s own needs. His point is useful when choosing training: start with the work the person will need to do, then compare the syllabus ([IAPP, AIGP: Artificial Intelligence Governance Professional](https://iapp.org/certify/aigp) and [Oliver Patel on LinkedIn](https://www.linkedin.com/posts/oliver-patel_heres-what-making-a-pizza-from-scratch-activity-7380859521285386240-SDCZ), checked 7 October 2026).

## What if you use AI tools rather than build them?

Start with the decisions your team makes about buying and using those tools. If your team builds AI, start with the decisions it makes about development and release. Write those needs down before comparing courses.

For a personal credential, compare that list with the AIGP syllabus. For the organisation, consider what you want an AI management system assessment to cover. Keep the learning goal and the certification goal clear ([IAPP, AIGP: Artificial Intelligence Governance Professional](https://iapp.org/certify/aigp) and [UKAS, Artificial Intelligence Management Systems, New Projects](https://www.ukas.com/accreditation/about/developing-new-programmes/development-programmes/aims/), checked 7 October 2026).

## What to do

1. Write down the work the person or organisation needs to do.
2. Read the AIGP syllabus, exam guide and candidate handbook before buying training ([IAPP, AIGP: Artificial Intelligence Governance Professional](https://iapp.org/certify/aigp), checked 7 October 2026).
3. Check the ongoing education and maintenance requirements ([IAPP, Certification FAQs](https://iapp.org/certify/faqs), checked 7 October 2026).
4. If the goal is organisational certification, ask about the AI management system to be assessed ([UKAS, Artificial Intelligence Management Systems, New Projects](https://www.ukas.com/accreditation/about/developing-new-programmes/development-programmes/aims/), checked 7 October 2026).

## Common questions

### Is AIGP a certificate for the whole company?

No. It is a personal credential. ISO 42001 addresses an organisation’s AI management system ([IAPP, AIGP: Artificial Intelligence Governance Professional](https://iapp.org/certify/aigp) and [UKAS, Artificial Intelligence Management Systems, New Projects](https://www.ukas.com/accreditation/about/developing-new-programmes/development-programmes/aims/), checked 7 October 2026).

### Does a course guarantee an AIGP pass?

No. IAPP says taking training does not guarantee an exam pass ([IAPP, Certification FAQs](https://iapp.org/certify/faqs), checked 7 October 2026).

### Where can I see what the exam covers?

IAPP publishes the AIGP Body of Knowledge and Exam Blueprint, plus an exam guide with sample questions ([IAPP, AIGP: Artificial Intelligence Governance Professional](https://iapp.org/certify/aigp), checked 7 October 2026).
